Anaconda is situated about 45 miles west of Butte and just a few miles from the Continental Divide, where the mountain peeks soar above 14,000 feet. Originally it was a company town for the Anaconda Mining Company, and visitors can still see the towering smokestack from the smelter that was decommissioned in 1980. The 585 foot high tower is notable in itself, being one of the tallest free-standing masonry structures in the world. Today it resides within the Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park.

Anaconda is in southwestern Montana, within a day's drive to both Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. Closer to town are several fine state parks. Opportunities for hikers, bikers, skiers and other outdoor enthusiasts abound. In addition, there are several top-notch golf courses in the area. In the summer, visitors may ride the scenic Copper King Express Train through the remote Durant Canyon. No matter what the season, Anaconda is worth a visit. Plan to stay in one of its charming Montana bed and breakfasts when you do.
