A port town on Fidalgo Island, Anacortes is a water transportation hub, linking mainland Washington State to Whidbey Island via the Deception Pass bridge, and to the San Juan Islands and Sydney, British Columbia, Canada via ferry. Once very much an industrial town with refineries and mills, Anacortes is now a destination for travelers and retirees. Being in the Olympic Rain Shadow, the sky is much clearer here than in Seattle, just 85 miles to the south. Half of the city is designated park or forest, and water almost entirely surrounds the town; add views of the Olympics and the Cascades, and you've got a beautiful spot.

Whether you are passing through Anacortes en route to the islands, or whether you plan to stay for a while, you will find time in Anacortes well spent. It is home to Washington state's largest fishing fleet, and there are many opportunities for visitors to get out on the water: on ferries, chartered boats, or kayaks, to name a few. If time allows, the bridge that connects Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands is worth a visit. The churning waters of Deception Pass are surrounded by rocky cliffs, and many trails lead the adventurous to various scenic perches. Or wander through scenic downtown Anacortes.
