Ashland is in Southern Oregon near Interstate 5, just fifteen miles north of the California border. Located at the south end of the Rogue Valley in close proximity to the Siskiyou Mountains, it is blessed with a sunny, dry climate that is ideal for a wide variety of outdoor recreation. Mt. Ashland offers both downhill and cross-country skiing in the winter; being just 15 miles from downtown Ashland, it couldn't be more convenient. When there is no snow, there are miles of trails along Bear Creek that are perfect for biking and walking, and the Lithia Loop Mountain Bike Route is a pleasurable challenge. River rafting or fishing on the Rogue and Klamath Rivers are also popular pastimes here.
Ashland is perhaps best known as the home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which runs from February through October each year. Founded in 1935, the Tony Award-winning festival has grown over the years and now stages eleven plays at three theatres; it also has a wide variety of ancillary activities, including an extensive theatre education program.
While this is a huge draw, the city of Ashland has plenty of other attractions and cultural activities. There is an Independent Film Festival and a Festival of New Plays, and a world-class Science Works Hands-On Museum. In fact, it would not be an overstatement to refer to Ashland as the cultural mecca of southern Oregon.
