Astoria is found on the northwest point in Oregon at the mouth of the Columbia River. The 4.1 mile-long Astoria-Megler Bridge links Astoria with Washington State on the opposite shore of the Columbia. As one of the oldest settlements of Americans who travelled west of the Rockies, it has a rich history that is beckoning to be explored. It was first "discovered" by Captain Robert Gray, who was commissioned by Boston traders to sail from the east around Cape Horn and up the northwest coast in search of furs to trade with China. On one of his trips in 1792, he discovered the entrance to the great river, which he named the Columbia. Thirteen years later, the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery visited the area, and travelers have been coming here ever since.
Use Astoria, Oregon as a base and stay in a northwest bed and breakfast or inn. There are many great destinations for day trips in the vicinity: Fort Stevens State Park, The Astoria Column, Fort Astoria, and the Flavel House Museum are just a few. Along the waterfront you may tour visiting ships, or ride the 1913 trolley up to a business district that is full of shops. The area makes a great weekend getaway from Portland, Olympia or Seattle.
