Butte is situated on the Continental Divide in the Montana Rockies. From the outset, Butte was a mining town; the first people sought gold and silver, but copper soon replaced them. During World War II, when demand for copper was particularly high, Butte became known as "the Richest Hill on Earth". In fact, people came from all over the world to work the mines and live the American dream, and their legacy is still evident in some of the local foods, such as the povitica (holiday nutroll) and Cornish pasty.
Today, Butte is a popular destination for travelers. It sits on the junction of I-90 and I-15, bringing visitors from all over the northwest and Montana. The downtown area of Butte - known as Uptown Butte - has many historic buildings. The World Museum of Mining educates folks on the pivotal role mining had in the creation of Butte, while the Mining Memorial commemorates miners who lost their lives in the shafts.
Butte is a great destination for anyone interested in outdoor sports. Old Forest Service Roads provide great trails for mountain biking, there are miles of hiking trails, and the fishing is superb. Plan to stay in a Butte Montana Bed and Breakfast while you explore this interesting mountain city.
